Tips for running a small business as a student

This academic year I’ve been juggling working towards my degree, writing for this blog and running my own small business… it’s been wild.

I haven’t had my business, HyperHoot, for all that long. I started selling my needle felted gifts earlier this year and I still have a lot to learn. But over these past few months as I’ve juggled my university work and my shop, I’ve come across a few tips that have helped me out and I’d like to share them with you guys. I know many students often think of ways to have their own ‘side hustle’ when they’re at university, so I help these six tips will help you out if you do decide to take the leap and start up your own business.

Putting yourself out there and the fear of the unknown- the life of a creative

After over a year since the idea was first materialised I hit publish on my Esty store, creating a listing for what I hope to be a fun little hobby in the making.

For those of you who don’t know Etsy is a global, online market place that mainly holds small, home-grown businesses. The majority of things sold are hand-made or of limited amount and the people behind the shops are really accommodating and helpful. I try to make an effort to buy as much stuff as possible from Etsy to support the small businesses there.

Since day one of discovering the platform I’ve wanted to sell on it. I make things for fun and thought it’d be a nice hobby that could bring in a small amount of pocket-money. The only problem was that I could never make the same thing consistently, and anything I did make was never a high enough standard to sell to people.

Getting genuine engagement as a ‘new’ blogger

Since starting up Lost In The Story, I have gone a bit twitter mad.

I’m always on it, whether it’s looking a science gifs of big sea creatures eating smaller fish or finding recommendations of books to read, I’m always on it.

Truth be told, I don’t post all that often. Sure I retweet things but not really post. I’m not witty or sarcastic enough to really have a voice on twitter. I’m just the weird kid in the corner who is secretly listing in on your conversations, or at least that’s how I feel.

One thing I’ve started to do is follow more bloggers. This is mainly down to the fact that I’m in a class of 8 at college where none of my peers have much in common with me. I just want to find comfort in like-minded people, so I turn to bloggers because bloggers are epic!

I’m not really into beauty or fashion blogging, because I have no sense of style and am too lazy to wear makeup. However, I love reading books, have a passion for God and care a lot about people’s mental heath. None of these things are popular niches in the blogging world, so I have to put some effort in to find these sorts of blog.
